I Accidentally Started A Brownie Business
I discovered a passion for baking about a year ago when I made brownies for the first time. The whole thing started as a disaster though, as I forgot to melt the butter, a crucial step in the recipe. I went into full-on panic mode and was ready to give up when my sister-in-law suggested putting the butter and sugar mixture on the stove in an attempt to get the butter melted.
But despite the original adversity, the brownies turned out surprisingly good, and everyone liked them. By everyone, I mean my family.
That’s when I decided I enjoyed baking so I tried out a few different brownie recipes. I made Oreo brownies, chocolate mousse brownies, and brookies.
But I also realized how stressful baking can be. I don’t believe the people who make it seem aesthetic on social media. Whenever I bake something, it’s like a hurricane hit my kitchen. Seriously, my counters are a mess. There’s batter pouring from my electric hand mixer, all-purpose flour flying everywhere, and eggshells scattered throughout my kitchen. Oh, and by the end of it, I have about a dozen dishes to wash (don’t ask me how).
Despite all of this, I still love baking. So when my brother suggested I sell my brownies, I thought hey why not. So I created a logo, came up with a business name, and got an Instagram page up and running. It’s been slow so far. I’ve only gotten a few orders, and I participated in one local market. My primary customers are really just my friends, but I don’t mind it so much.
I think the biggest problem is that I’m not so great at advertising. I’m bad at taking aesthetic pictures and making the brownies look especially appealing. And for some reason, I find it difficult to package the brownies. They’re surprisingly really messy.
So you still may be wondering why I even bothered starting this business in the first place. And it may sound a bit self-absorbed but I get an odd sense of satisfaction whenever someone tells me they like my brownies. A friend of mine literally said, “I want to marry you and your brownies.”
All jokes aside I wanted to start selling my brownies to learn how to run and operate a business, even if it is something as small as brownies.
It’s been a fun and exciting journey so far, so I’ve decided I’m going to keep on trying and keep on sharing my brownies with the world.

Congratulations on your brownie business HM! 🎊 I'm sure you learned a lot in the process.
